Management subjects and soft skills taught in hotel management Posted: 01 May 2010 11:23 AM PDT What are the management subjects taught in hotel management schools? Sales and marketing, human resources, accounting and finance, law etc are the few subjects taught in hotel management schools. Additionally students are also taught a foreign language and soft skills, engineering and facility planning. What are the soft skills required to succeed in this profession? The hospitality sector is a segment here employees come in direct contract with consumers. Hence, the following soft skills are crucial if one wants to pursue a career in this industry: 1) Smile 2) A well groomed personality 3) The desire and passion to serve people. 4) Self discipline 5) Etiquettes and manners 6) Enthusiasm 7) Tact and diplomacy 8) Ability to think on your feet 9) Adaptability 10) Problem solving skills. How and when should one start planning for a career in hospitality? Firstly, a student must be sure that he / she wants to join the hospitality sector. They can then find out whether they have the aptitude for the same. If one is extremely sure of joining this industry right after class 10 then one should choose the relevant stream and subjects in junior college. IB students wanting to pursue this career can opt for the food and hospitality option at the A level, if offered. Any tips for success in this industry? The formula for success in this industry is fun + mastery + network. This means that students must enjoy the profession that they choose. Fun brings about creativity energy, timelessness, healthy competitiveness and sheer joy. Therefore, those who believe that they have right natural abilities for hospitality must insist upon it with their parents as they will be giving themselves a chance of being a winner. Mastery is the state of doing as much study and gaining as many certifications to keep your self updated of the changes in this segment. Networking can help you get the right break at the right moment as well as aid you in climbing up the career ladder faster. |
